The terms "detoxification" and "drainage" are often used interchangeably, but in reality they refer to different, yet complementary, processes in maintaining animal (and human) health.
1. Detoxification
Detoxification is a broad and complex process that involves eliminating toxins that have accumulated in the body. These toxins can come from external sources, such as pesticides, environmental pollutants, and medications, or be produced internally, as a result of cellular metabolism. Detoxification involves key organs such as the liver, kidneys, and intestines, and focuses on eliminating these harmful substances to restore the body's overall balance. During detoxification, the body "neutralizes" toxins, making them less harmful before expelling them.
Herbs such as milk thistle , turmeric, and dandelion support this process by stimulating the liver and other organs responsible for breaking down and eliminating toxins.
2. Drainage
Drainage , on the other hand, is a more specific and localized action. It is a process in which the excretory organs (liver, kidneys, skin, lungs and intestines) are stimulated to facilitate the elimination of fluids and toxins that have already accumulated in the body. While detoxification focuses on "disposal" of toxins, drainage helps "wash away" this waste, accelerating its expulsion.
Plants used for drainage, such as nettle and dandelion , are often diuretics and particularly support the kidneys and lymphatic system in eliminating toxins through urine. This process is particularly useful for preventing fluid retention, reducing inflammation and purifying the blood.
How Detoxification and Drainage Work Together
Detoxification and drainage work in synergy. Before draining, the body must be effectively detoxified, so that toxins are neutralized and ready to be expelled. After detoxification, drainage ensures that these substances are rapidly eliminated, minimizing the risk of them reaccumulating or overloading the excretory organs.
When to Choose Detoxification or Drainage?
- Detoxification : It is indicated in cases where there is an overload of toxins in the body, especially after drug treatments, exposure to pollutants or chronic diseases.
- Drainage : This is most useful when the goal is to rid the body of excess fluids and accumulated waste, or as a follow-up to detoxification.
